Challenge #23 — A SuperCardboard Sculpture

Calling All SuperArtists!!!

This challenge is inspired by an installation titled by-production by Indian artist Asim Waqif. An installation is a sculpture-like artwork that is created or put together in the place where people can walk all around it and often interact with it. We created this challenge for our grantee Cool Culture’s upcoming "Catch the Cool" event on June 14th at the Queens Museum, which will give hundreds of young SuperArtists a unique first-time museum experience.

Artist Asim Waqif created this installation, so people would think a bit more about the trash that they throw away. Asim’s installation was made up entirely of items found in the Queens Museum garbage. The artist wanted to bring the garbage back to life and used it for his installation!

We thought we could do the same thing using one of our favorite materials -- cardboard!!!

Your SuperArtist challenge is to use recycled cardboard pieces to create your own installation or sculpture. You can take this challenge in any direction you want based on your interests! Challenge yourself, SuperArtist, to make a cardboard sculpture that’s all YOU!

To Begin —
Break down those Amazon, diaper or moving boxes so they are flat. Then, decide what your sculpture will resemble. A spaceship, a doll crib, the Eiffel Tower...use what you love as your inspiration for your cardboard creation!!!

Materials —
You’ll need an adult helper for this challenge. Using adult scissors (with an adult doing the cutting!), cut pieces of cardboard into many shapes and sizes. For each piece, cut multiple slits, approx 1/4” wide (easiest way to make a slit is to cut 2 parallel lines, then pull up the cardboard slit and snip it off). Once your pieces have been cut, build away by sliding the cardboard pieces together into the slits. You may have to practice building a bit and decide what to build as you go! As a bonus, you may want to decorate each cardboard piece using markers.

We’d love to share your ideas with our SuperArtist friends in Queens, so please snap a photo of your cardboard sculpture and post to our SA gallery @lululeofund on Instagram.*
